VILLARREAL defender Ruben Semedo has been sent to prison after appearing in court for allegedly tying up and beating a man in his own home.
The footballer was remanded in custody pending an ongoing judicial probe after his alleged victim told an investigating judge he had threatened him with a gun during a terrifying kidnap ordeal.
Semedo, 23, had been remanded in custody pending an ongoing judicial probe after his alleged victim told an investigating judge he had threatened him with a gun during a terrifying kidnap ordeal.
The news came following reports he had threatened to cut off his alleged victim’s finger and beat him with a baseball bat — before shooting at him twice without hitting him as he managed to escape.
Police seized a gun believed to have been used in the incident — linked to a row over a debt — during a search of Semedo’s home on a luxury estate called Torre en Conill near Valencia.
The unnamed victim called in police on February 12, blaming Semedo and two other men including an unnamed relative of the footballer’s.
He told cops that, while he was being held hostage, his three attackers ransacked his flat and stole more than £20,000 and other valuables including a computer.
He is said to have escaped after pretending to take them to the home of a friend who owed them money.
The other two suspects are reported to be on the run.
Semedo, who signed for La Liga side Villarreal in June last year from Sporting, was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of wounding, unlawful detention and robbery.
He appeared before a judge at a court in the town of Lliria just north of Valencia this morning.
A court official had confirmed after his appearance behind closed doors: “Court of Instruction Number Six in Lliria has ordered the remand in prison of Ruben Semedo.
“The judge is investigating him on suspicion of crimes of attempted homicide, wounding, threats, unlawful detention, illegal possession of a gun and robbery with violence.”
Local reports said the serial number on the gun found in Semedo’s home — in a basement used as a home disco — had been wiped off.
Semedo’s agent Catia Balde has claimed the footballer is the victim of a financial fraud.
