The Welsh side came back in with an improved offer of £6million upfront with incentives taking it to £8m.

The 27-year-old signed a new two-year deal last summer and the Championship strugglers were looking to tie him down on improved terms.

Madine has bagged 10 times in 29 appearances this season, already matching his figure for the whole of his last campaign.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has been working tirelessly all month to add more firepower to his attack before tonight’s 11pm deadline.
