Since that  3-1 win against the La Liga giants, Tottenham’s Premier League title hopes have collapsed with defeats to Arsenal, Leicester and Manchester City.

But the Belgian defender is nearing a return, according to the , and has resumed outdoor training and hopes to join the squad after Sunday’s trip to Southampton.

Despite his injury, the 28-year-old is set to be offered a bumper new deal by Spurs chiefs, to keep him at the club.

The defender’s contract expires in 2019 and there were fears he could be sold in the summer with the club refusing to break their wage structure.

The ex-Atletico Madrid centre-back's agent revealed back in October that "seven or eight" clubs were vying for his signature, and urged Spurs to either tie him down, or sell him.

Stijn Francis said: "When you look at Toby's statistics, they are impressive. Either he deserves an appropriate contract, or else he should be given a transfer.

"There are not many central defenders around who can play like he can.

"But these clubs will have to negotiate with Tottenham's chairman, Daniel Levy."

When quizzed as to whether a new deal was on the table, Alderweireld himself said: "No, like I said, I am focused on football.

"The rest, I don't know, we will see about that."
