But there appears to be a new twist in the tale of the German's fate, after a selfie posted on social media by centre-back Dejan Lovren.

The Croatian defender uploaded a picture of himself smiling with Can and Georginio Wijnaldum, which Sturridge and Moreno then commented on.

Chelsea's former star striker simply stated "Kerrrchinnggg!!!", while the Spanish left-back messaged two dollar-sign emojis, along with two fist-bump emojis.

Lovren himself captioned his photo with a wink emoji, fuelling speculation Can could stay beyond the summer.

The ex-Bayer Leverkusen star has put in a string of starring performances for Jurgen Klopp's men this season.

Since joining in 2014, the Confederations Cup winner has cemented himself as one of Liverpool's most important players, but has so far decided to run his contract down.

Can is believed to have turned down moves to Manchester United and Bayern Munich in favour of the Old Lady, but Klopp is still hopeful he can retain his services.

Liverpool are determined to keep the 24-year-old until at least the end of the season, refusing to part ways with him in the winter transfer window.
