Forest went on to win the game 4-2 in an action-packed third round tie featuring two penalties.
Championship strugglers Forest couldn’t have hopes for a better result against the north London side.
They went 1-0 up with an easy header from Lichaj after 20 minutes before Arsenal equalised with a scrappy goal from Per Mertesacker.
But just before half-time Lichaj wrote his own page in the Forest history books when he caught a poor clearance on his chest and hit a first time volley into the top corner of the goal.
Ben Brereton made it 3-1 after 64 minutes when he converted a penalty but Danny Welbeck pulled one back in 79 minutes to set up an exciting finish.
A controversial penalty six minutes later was converted for Forest by Kieran Dowell, despite protests he kicked the ball twice after slipping.
Confident Lichaj was in no doubt about the volley, saying after the match: “When I hit it I knew it was going in.
"I think we deserved the win in the end.”
The next Gillette Precision Play of the FA Cup will come in the last weekend in January when the fourth round matches take place.
