And incredibly, it was a goal from January 1 - in Arsenal's clash with Crystal Palace - to run out the winner.

Just hours into 2017, Giroud checked back from his run into the box to somehow rifle Alexis Sanchez's cross into the net off the crossbar with his left heel.

The French star's stunning strike racked up an impressive 30 per cent of your vote - based on nearly 11,000 submissions - to be crowned Goal of the Year.

Meanwhile, Liverpool star Emre Can came in second in our poll for his unreal overhead kick effort against Watford - with 23 per cent.

The acrobatic effort won the game for the Reds in spectacular manner to help Jurgen Klopp and Co clinch a Champions League berth.

There was a tie for third in our Goal of the Year vote, with Eden Hazard and Wayne Rooney picking up 13 per cent of the vote apiece.

Hazard's goal for Chelsea against Arsenal saw the Belgian collect the ball on the halfway line, before dribbling his way towards goal and finding the net.

On the hand, Rooney's was an unreal effort, as he simply thumped a shot from Joe Hart's miscued clearance from his own half into the back of the net.

Antonio Valencia's screamer for Manchester United against Everton completed the top five, picking up nine per cent of your vote.

Next up saw Andy Carroll (four per cent) and Jermain Defoe (three per cent) come in sixth and seventh respectively.

Soufiane Boufal, Xherdan Shaqiri (both two per cent) and Charlie Daniels (one per cent) completed the top ten from a sensational, goal-filled 2017.
