I WAS delighted to see Harry Kane beat my Premier League record for goals in a calendar year.
It had taken long enough to be broken, 22 years. But if I wanted anyone to overhaul my total it would be a young English striker.
Not just that, but a nice guy as well and one with huge character and ability.
Kane truly can do it all on the pitch and is a role model off it.
He can score with both feet, his head, from close range and distance.
One big improvement I have noticed in the last 12 months is how much quicker he is as well.
Of course, the hope for us all is he can carry this form on into the summer.
Great teams at any level rely on a great goalscorer and we have one in Kane.
While you might not put us up with the best teams going into this World Cup, as long as you have a player like Kane, anything can happen.
That, of course, exerts extra pressure on him but I used to love that and I sense he is the same character.
Not only has he beaten my calendar-year record in the Premier League, but with his second successive hat-trick yesterday he eclipsed Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for goals in all competitions in 2017 for club and country — 57.
That is some company to be in but, believe me, he could score goals for Barcelona and Real Madrid as well. There lies the problem for Spurs going forward, of course.
The club will not want to move into their brand-new stadium without their biggest star.
‘One of our own’ as the Spurs faithful chant.
But things have stalled a bit on the pitch after title tilts in the last two seasons, although they have been impressive in the Champions League.
If they don’t win anything in the next two years, Kane could have a big decision to make and there will be no lack of suitors with big money wanting him.
The fact Spurs are his club will be a big factor.
I know as well as anyone what it means to play for your home-town club and stay loyal to them.
For now, Spurs fans should just enjoy it — let’s hope England fans do this summer, too.
