Harry Kane breaks Alan Shearer’s record for Premier League goals scored in calendar year with opening strike against Southampton

TOTTENHAM striker Harry Kane has broken Alan Shearer’s calendar year record for Premier League goals.
Kane hit a hat-trick as Spurs brushed aside a hapless Southampton at Wembley to take his 2017 tally to 39 goals.
Shearer hit 36 goals for Blackburn Rovers in 1995 and has already taken to social media to congratulate Kane on his achievement.
Shearer tweeted: “You’ve had a magnificent 2017. You deserve to hold the record of most @premierleague goals in calender year.
“Well done and keep up the good work.”
Kane’s second goal just before the break also saw him move ahead of Lionel Messi with the most goals scored in a year across the top five leagues in Europe.
He has now hit 56 goals for club and country in 2017, and hit that mark in fewer matches than the Barca star.
Former Spurs forward Gary Lineker tweeted his delight at Kane’s record-breaking year and took a cheeky dig at the man who has lost his record today.
Lineker said on twitter: “Congratulation to Harry Kane on breaking the record for most Premier League goals scored in a calendar year. Thoughts are with at this difficult time.”
The forward hit his third treble of the season and eighth of 2017 when he colly slotted past Fraser Forster on 69 minutes.
