Jose Fonte hits back at David Sullivan after West Ham owner revealed his kids urged him not to sign the Portuguese

Fonte has struggled since his move from Southampton in January but the Euro 2016 winner has defended his decade in England

JOSE FONTE has labelled West Ham owner David Sullivan's claims he was advised by his own kids NOT to sign the defender as “ignorance”.

Sullivan made the extraordinary claim in an interview with the Guardian before the home win over Chelsea, which Fonte missed through injury.

He claimed he was not involved in club transfer dealings and former boss Slaven Bilic wanted Fonte and Robert Snodgrass from Hull.

The Hammers owner said: “My kids begged me not to sign them.”

Portuguese international Fonte joined the Hammers in January from Southampton for £8million.

The 33-year-old has fought back to show some of the form that helped his country become European champions in 2016 before his injury setback last month.

“It's not going to change who I am, it's not going to change what I do.

"I'm going to keep being the good professional that I am. I am going to keep working hard to try and help my team-mates and the manager.

“What has been said has no effect on me or who I am."

The experienced defender insists his future in East London is not in his hands but defended his decade in English football.

Fonte added: “That decision is not for me, I am 33 years of age.

“I have 500 or 600 appearances. I know what I have done in football.

“I know how hard I have to work to be in this position.

"It makes no difference to me, I will still continue to be the same guy I have always been."
