But ahead of another lengthy spell of rehab, Watmore, 23, has been boosted by a surprise letter from the European champions.

The note was sent by Real’s director of institutional relations Emilio Butragueno.

It read: “On behalf of our president, Florentino Perez, and those who work for Real Madrid, we would like to wish you a smooth and speedy recovery from your knee injury.”

Watmore’s dad Ian tweeted the letter and wrote: “Duncan went to rehab today to find this letter waiting for him.

“How classy is that from Real Madrid? I now hope they win the Champions League again!”

Both Sunderland and Watmore suffered the sucker-punch last month, with new boss Chris Coleman revealing the sickening news.
