The loss left Chile sixth in qualifying and meant that they missed out on a play-off on goal difference.

Posting on Instagram, Pardo said: "Thank you, Captain America, for all that you have experienced. It was really beautiful.

"But when they put on the shirt it has to be with professionalism.

"I know that most of them busted their a***s, while others left parties and even did not train because of  their hangovers.

"If the cap fits, put it on and stop crying. Because now it is a whole country that is crying."

Chile started a dramatic night of South American qualifiers third in the table and on course for an automatic qualification spot.

Argentina jumped up to third as Lionel Messi's hat-trick gave them a 3-1 win in Ecuador.

With Chile vs Brazil and Colombia vs Peru both goalless at half-time, it appeared to be Chile, Colombia and Peru battling for fourth and fifth spot.

But after the break Manchester City keeper Bravo conceded two goal in three minutes in Sao Paulo.

Colombia then took the lead - meaning Chile were clinging on to fifth spot and heading for a play-off with New Zealand.

But Colombia keeper David Ospina's blunder allowed Peru to equalise from a free-kick.

That relegated Chile to sixth in the standings below Peru, with another Brazil goal compounding their misery.
