, the Dutchman is in line to return to the Gunners, believed to be in a coaching role.

Only recently did Overmars fuel speculation over his future back to Arsenal, revealing that the life of a director isn't exciting.

He said: "I think there is a list with some names and I might be on it, but it’s not that exciting yet.

"I know the club pretty well, I have always kept in touch with Arsenal. So in that respect it is not surprising, because I’ve had a few good years."

However the former Barcelona winger only recently signed a new four-year to extend his stay with the Eredivisie giants.

Arsene Wenger has been reluctant to bring former stars back to the club - though former Premier League champions Steve Bould and Jens Lehmann both hold high coaching positions at Arsenal.

Overmars - a member of the 1997/98 double-winning campaign - established himself as a firm fans favourite during his three-season stint.

He built up a reputation of scoring in the big games - including a goal away at Old Trafford in a 1-0 win over Manchester United, a brace against Everton on the final game in the 1998 season and netting the opener against Newcastle in the FA Cup final.
