Toby Alderweireld’s agent urges Tottenham to offer him a new, lucrative contract… or let him leave the club
TOBY ALDERWEIRELD'S agent has urged Tottenham to offer him a new, lucrative contract... or let him leave the club.
The Belgian defender, 28, is still yet to be offered an improved deal by the Premier League side, with "seven or eight" sides interested in signing him.
Alderweireld has been on the same contract since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and is well behind Spurs' top earners, including Harry Kane, Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris.
The centre-back's agent Stijn Francis said: "When you look at Toby's statistics, they are impressive.
"Either he deserves an appropriate contract, or else he should be given a transfer.
"There are not many central defenders around who can play like he can.
"But these clubs will have to negotiate with Tottenham's chairman, Daniel Levy."
When quizzed as to whether a new deal was on the table, Alderweireld himself said: "No, like I said, I am focused on football.
"The rest, I don't know, we will see about that."
Last month, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed he has no concerns regarding Alderweireld's contract situation.
Poch claimed: "He was talking with me in my office this morning and he is so happy, he wants to make it clear he is fully committed with the club.
"He is happy with his contract, two years plus one. It is not an issue.
"I recognise some rumours in the last few days, but he is so relaxed, so calm.
"His idea is to try to play here, he is happy here, there is no reason to move."
