Chesterfield to give club legend Jack Lester first senior management role after Jim Sheridan sacking

Jack Lester is returning to Chesterfield as manager

JACK LESTER is returning to Chesterfield as manager after the Spireites agreed a compensation package with Nottingham Forest.

The former striker is currently coaching the Tricky Trees' Under-23 side but he is set to leave his position at the City Ground and succeed Gary Caldwell.

Chesterfield sacked the ex-Wigan boss just hours after their 2-1 home defeat to Accrington on September 16.

That result left them second bottom of League Two with just five matches from their opening eight matches.

Lester scored 94 goals for the club during his time as a player between 2007 and 2013 and helped them to the fourth tier title.

The Derbyshire-based side retired his number 14 shirt after he left them due to his exploits.

He is expected to be confirmed in his new role on Wednesday morning.

Chesterfield's director of recruitment and development Guy Branston has been overseeing first-team affairs as caretaker manager.

He was in charge for the 1-0 defeat at Luton on Saturday and will be in the dug-out for the final time this evening for the home clash with Yeovil.

Branston has been involved in the selection process, but Lester's appointment goes against his belief that the strugglers needed a man with a "proven track record".

However, the 41-year-old Lester is believed to bringing in an experienced No2.

His first game in charge will be a home game against Chesterfield this weekend.
