But Carlisle is thankfully OK and will now be reunited with his loved ones.

Preston Police tweeted: “Great news folks. Clarke Carlisle has been found safe in Liverpool.

“Thanks to everyone who shared our appeal. Have a good weekend.”

The former Premier League star made more than 500 appearances for nine different clubs.

But Carlisle has a history of mental illness after battling depression and alcoholism.

And fears were sparked when he went AWOL today following a failed suicide attempt in 2014.

His wife had issued an emotional plea on Twitter earlier today

He said a year after the incident: “I had to die. This wasn’t escaping or running away. This was the perfect answer. It made everyone happy and it ticked every box.”

But pregnant wife Carrie’s SOS appeal on Twitter this morning seems to have worked, with the message being shared by numerous people concerned for her husband’s whereabouts.

It said: “#Missing Clarke’s last known whereabouts was Manchester City Centre at 6am. If you see him please get in touch.”
