New Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain wants to be the new Steven Gerrard
ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN has claimed he wants to be the new Steven Gerrard after revealing Jordan Henderson has been telling him to move to Anfield for FIVE years.
Ox hopes to make his debut for the Kop in today's showdown with Manchester City at the Emirates.
The 24-year-old quit Arsenal after refusing to sign a new deal at the Emirates and feels working under boss Jurgen Klopp will take his game to the next level.
And he has also revealed his admiration for former skipper Gerrard and is keen to follow in the Anfield legend's footsteps.
He told: "When I really started to take a massive interest in football, I was playing centre midfield and was told to learn from people in my position at the top of the game.
"So Stevie (Gerrard) was the one I used to watch - I love to run with the ball as well, and over the years I'd see him making long, marauding runs through the middle, long strides bursting into the box, getting shots in and coring amazing goals.
"Stevie was one of the most exciting players to watch, attacking-wise and he could pass, but at the same time he had that passion.
"When I got the chance to play with him for England, I saw how hard he worked every day and how good he was."
He added: "That was one of my dreams, to play like him (Gerrard).
"I used to love watching Thierry Henry, one of my idols as well, but I knew I wouldn't be a striker so I wanted to be Stevie G.
Liverpool fans can thank Henderson for his part in persuading Oxlade-Chamberlain to move to Merseyside.
Henderson had been telling the Ox for five years and Anfield was the place for him to realise his potential.
The Ox added: "When I was with England with Stevie we touched on Liverpool, but Jordan (Henderson) is the one who most talked about Liverpool.
"For five years, he's kept telling me that I need to come to Liverpool because he was enjoying it so much and he feels I'd fit in, and the club would get the best out of me, this week it's come true"
