The best and worst value for money Premier League signings… with Arsenal RIGHT to sell Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool
THIS summer saw one of the most incredible transfer windows of all time.
From the Kylian Mbappe saga to Neymar‘s world-record shattering £198million move to Paris Saint-Germain, it was one for the ages.
But even outside of Europe, the Premier League was busy… very busy.
In fact, well over £1BILLION was spent in the English top-flight alone this summer.
However, there were also some absolute bargains, with Juventus bringing in key man Blaise Matuidi for a mere £18.2m… or £324,667 per contribution.
Here, thanks to research from , we take a look at the best – and worst – value for money signings of the summer window, based on their statistical input.
BEST ATTACKERS
THEY may have spent a huge sum to bring him in, but Liverpool‘s signing of Mohamed Salah already screams value.
The Egyptian ace cost a mere £1.7m per goal or assist, ahead of new Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson (£2.3m), Marko Arnautovic (£2.7m) and Bernardo Silva (£2.9m).
WORST ATTACKERS
HOWEVER, Liverpool win both the gold medal and the wooden spoon thanks to their signing of Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The former Arsenal star cost the Reds £4.6m per goal or assist, behind only new West Brom star Oliver Burke (£5.1m).
BEST DEFENDERS
IN defence, Arsenal have plenty to celebrate, as their capture of Sead Kolisanic cost them just £54,737 per tackle or interception.
That’s ahead of Liverpool new-boy Andrew Robertson (£98,148), Javier Manquillo (£111,74), Harry Maguire £180,855) and Davide Zappacosta (£238,566).
WORST DEFENDERS
At the other end of the scale however, Mamadou Sakho cost Crystal Palace a whopping £1.7m per interception or tackle.
That’s worse than Tottenham new-boy Serge Aurier (£539,686), Kieran Gibbs (£507,273), Kyle Walker (£501,818) and Antonio Rudiger (£483,500).
BEST STRIKERS
BASED purely on goals, rather than goals and assists, no forward was better value for money than Jermain Defoe, who cost just £450,666 per strike.
That record is better than big names Fernando Llorente (£1.3m), Javier Hernandez (£2.1m), Alexandre Lacazette (£2.2m) and Andre Gray (£2.4m).
WORST STRIKERS
YET it’s dreadful news for Swansea who splashed an astonishing £8.6m per goal for Wilfried Bony.
That rate is worse than Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.2m), Alvaro Morata (£4.5m), Jay Rodriguez (£3.4m) and Romelu Lukaku (£3.4m).
