The Bayern Munich midfielder will hang up his boots for the Copa America champions at the end of their 2018 World Cup trail
CHILE supremo Arturo Vidal has announced he will retire from international duty at the end of their 2018 World Cup trail.
The Bayern Munich midfielder has been part of the side that have lost back-to-back matches, as they are in real danger of missing out on Russia next summer.
Taking to Instagram, the 30-year-old said: “Sorry Chile for these two defeats!!
“We gave it our all but we couldn’t do it. We will carry on fighting!
“I have two games and the World Cup left, thank you for all your love over the years.”
has been part of the squad that have triumphed in back-to-back Copa America championships, but his side have flattered to deceive in the South American World Cup preliminary completion.
Bolivia beat Chile 1-0 on Tuesday evening thanks to a penalty from Juan Carlos Arce, while they also suffered a 3-0 defeat against Paraguay last week as they slipped down to sixth in the table.
Only the top four automatically qualify, while the fifth-placed country take part in a play-off tie against a side from the Oceanic region.
Argentina currently occupy fifth spot with just two games to play, with La Roja coming up against Ecuador and Brazil in their remaining two fixtures.
If Chile progress to the World Cup next summer, Vidal would then retire at the end of the tournament, but failure to qualify will mean he will call an abrupt end to his international career.
Alexis Sanchez was left raging after last night’s defeat – lashing out on social media after journalists criticised his recent performances.
Meanwhile, Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed Serie A side Inter Milan did not launch a bid for the former Juventus man.
He told Mediaset: “Nobody asked us for him and there was never an official offer for him, not even this summer when the market was open.
“So I cannot confirm (Inter wanted him).”
