Southampton are officially the most boring Premier League team since 2015-16… but which side holds the all-time record?
SOUTHAMPTON are officially the most boring Premier League team since the start of the 2015-16 season.
No team has played out more goalless draws in that time than the Saints, racking up a massive 12 of the dreary fixtures.
However, it’s their exploits this season which has seen them shoot to the top of the pile.
Heading into the 2017-18 campaign, it was Manchester United who sat in the No1 spot with 11 goalless draws in the preceding two seasons.
In a remarkable turnaround however, Jose Mourinho has orchestrated two thumping 4-0 wins and a 2-0 victory to kick-off the season, which is a far cry from the drab performances of the Louis van Gaal era.
Southampton went into the current season with ten goalless draws to their name, but have played out TWO this season alone… from just three games.
Mauricio Pellegrino saw his side play out a snooze-fest on the opening day of the season against Swansea.
A thrilling, last-gasp 3-2 win over West Ham a week later got fans thinking that exciting football was returning to St Mary’s.
But surprise, surprise, a week later Saints stumbled to a turgid 0-0 away to newly-promoted Huddersfield.
However, Southampton are far from the most boring team in the history of the Premier League… with that dubious honour going to Aston Villa.
The Villans – now playing in the Championship – have logged an astonishing 98 goalless draws in the top flight since 1992-93.
That’s 11 ahead of the next “best” in Everton – on 87 – and 14 ahead of Arsenal.
Liverpool complete the top four with a sky-high 83 0-0s in the Premier League era.
