TOTTENHAM star Marcus Edwards was reportedly the subject of a bid from Ajax - but the wonderkid believes he can play first-team football this season.
But that did not stop the Dutch giants supposedly making a move for his services this summer.
It is thought Edwards put pen to paper on a new Spurs deal after believing he could have a crack at making the senior side this campaign.
And in a series of tweets today, David Powderly, an academy coach with Charlton Athletic, made the claim about Ajax's interest.
He posted: "Ajax went out to try and buy Marcus Edwards to make a point that English players are good enough.
"They wanted to buy and bring Edwards through, then sell him on at high price. To make English clubs think again.
"The whole point... so English clubs stopped purchasing their youngsters at 15-18.
