Tottenham transfer news: Spurs hoping to make last gasp season-long loan deal for Barcelona star Andre Gomes
North London giants can trump West Ham's interest by offering the Champions League and better Premier League prospects
TOTTENHAM look as though they will beat West Ham to Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes.
The North London club, who also remain interested in Everton's Ross Barkley, are confident they can kick-start the Portuguese player's career.
It is understood that the loan deals being discussed by Tottenham and West Ham for Gomes both involve a hefty fee and and big wages.
Gomes only joined Barcelona from Valencia last summer.
But he has suffered a difficult time at the Nou Camp and wants to play regular first-team football.
The 24-year-old is available on a free loan basis simply to end his nightmare spell at Nou Camp.
Gomes only made 17 appearances for the Catalans last season and does not appear to be in Ernesto Valverde’s plans for the new campaign.
His only appearance so far this season came in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Real Madrid.
Gomes remains under contract with Barcelona until 2021, but the Spanish club are willing to temporarily offload the Portuguese international.
The midfielder was pivotal to the success of the Portugal side that beat France to the European Championship title last year.
With just one cap under his belt so far this term, the 24-year-old is prepared for a deadline day switch.
West Ham made the running after missing out on another Portugal star in William Carvalho.
They are desperate to bolster their squad after a miserable start to the campaign.
Both Tottenham and the Hammers could offer him Gomes starts he craves ahead of next summer's World Cup in Russia.
But Spurs hold the trump card in that they can offer newcomers Champions League soccer - and the chance to challenge for the Premier League title.
Sadly, West Ham fall flat on both counts.
reported that Spurs were also interested in Barkley but might have been put off making a move for him in this window due to a serious hamstring injury.
