Negotiations collapsed on Thursday when West Ham refused to meet Sporting’s £40million price-tag for Carvalho.

A Sky Sports source said: “He just got too expensive and you have to say no sometimes.

“Also, he’s not trained for three weeks. He has done no pre-season training – so he might have needed four to six weeks to be ready to play for us.”

Reports on Friday then claimed the Hammers were continuing to monitor the situation ahead of Saturday’s clash against Newcastle.

But West Ham went on to suffer their third defeat in as many games and they could now be willing to pay whatever it takes to bring Carvalho to the Premier League.

Slaven Bilic has stressed throughout the window that he’s looking for quality over quantity.

And Portugal international Carvalho would certainly be an upgrade on West Ham’s current crop of midfielders.

The move could be revived quite easily as the player had already agreed personal terms with the Hammers.

But it could also spell Bilic’s final warning, with the Croatian unlikely to last much longer if his side continue to crash and burn after spending big on just one signing.
