Werder Bremen 0 Bayern Munich 2: Robert Lewandowski’s second-half quick-fire double sees Carlo Ancelotti’s men over the line

The German champions follow up their opening day victory over Bayer Leverkusn with three more points

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI'S late, quick-fire double earned Bayern Munich a hard-fought win against Werder Bremen.

After a tense first half in which both teams had chances, it looked like the reigning Bundesliga champions might drop points in just the second match of the season.

But Lewandowski eventually broke the deadlock 18 minutes from time — and added another three minutes later for good measure.

Carlo Ancelotti welcomed back Manuel Neuer for the first time since April, but was without Renato Sanches, after the midfielder asked to be omitted from matchday squad to 'concentrate on his future'.

Bayern started the contest much stronger and Corentin Tolisso hit the bar after just seven minutes.

Before Arturo Vidal and Franck Ribery came close to open the scoring.

However, the Bavarians were grateful to Niklas Sule, who cleared off the line to prevent the hosts taking the lead.

The let-off was a wake-up call and Bayern came racing out the blocks in the second half.

Thiago Alcantara showed sublime skill to tee up Vidal, whose effort was blocked.

But, despite the pressure mounting, Werder held firm.

With 65 minutes on the clock, Ancelotti threw on Kinglsey Coman in place of Arjen Robben — and the Frenchman made an almost instant impact.

Seven minutes later, he fired a dangerous across the box for Lewandowski to delightfully flick past Jiri Pavlenka in the Werder goal.

Ancelotti reacted by taking of Ribery for Thomas Muller — and history repeated itself.

Just a minute later, the Germany international plays in his strike partner who recovers from initially lose the ball to compose himself and fire through Pavlenka’s legs

The second took the sting out of the contest and Bayern came close to adding a third in stoppage time when Joshua Kimmich’s effort was deflected just wide.

Borussia Dortmund later joined Bayern on two wins from two with a 2-0 victory over Hertha Berlin.

The talk ahead of the match surrounded the imminent transfer of Ousmane Dembele to Barcelona.

However, the Yellow-Blacks put that to one side to earn an impressive win.
