And Toffees boss Ronald Koeman has refused to rule out making a move for the temperamental forward.

He was asked in a press conference whether further signings would be "permanent or temporary" when he responded with: "Is this about Costa?"

"Of course you like to sign players for the future, but if you can get the best one that way, then why not?"

“That’s for six months, the season, two years.

“It’s difficult because it needs to be a quality player, or a young player who can develop or improve.

“We have the possibility maybe to sign good players, but we don’t play in the Champions League – and that sometimes makes things very difficult.”

But Atletico Madrid remain the most likely destination for Costa.

Radio station  claims the striker is hopeful of rejoining Atletico before the month is out and will be compensated for being out of pocket following a bust-up with Antonio Conte.

Costa is currently AWOL at Chelsea after being cut from the first-team squad soon after last season’s title win.

The striker is back home in Brazil and is refusing to return to London, prompting the Blues to already fine him two week’s wages worth £300,000.

However, Costa is adamant he won’t leave his family just to train with kids and insists he wants a reunion with Diego Simeone in the Spanish capital.
