And at the same time they are still interested in signing Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez.

Asked about the pair, Pep said: "They are Monaco and Arsenal players, so nothing to say."

Mbappe has appeared likely to go to Madrid all summer but with the deal still not done, City are ready to pounce.

Guardiola said: "The player is still at Monaco, still on that team.

"Anything can happen - we are still looking at other players in the market. There are a lot of other players, but he is still on that team.

"We have two exceptional forwards in Gabriel and Sergio. We will see. Unfortunately the market finishes on August 31.

"We will see if we do something. I think other clubs will sign many players."

Mbappe is believed to have set his heart of a switch to the Bernabeu but he might have one eye on Los Angeles later.

City take on the Spanish giants in an International Champions League game at the Coliseum.

Guardiola says his club are making great strides to catch up with the biggest teams on the continent.

He said: "Madrid doesn’t have more than Manchester City have.

"Players are very important and we always try to get the best players possible.

"Abu Dhabi came in and invested in the team. Over the past five or six years we climbed to the top and we’re now in the top three or four.

"In order to get to the level of Madrid or Barcelona we just need time."
