Middlesbrough land Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga as £14m offer and £60k-a-week deal beats off Burnley and Watford bids
New Riverside manager Garry Monk shows his promotion intent by winning transfer battle with two Prem Lge clubs
MIDDLESBROUGH will fork out £14million for Britt Assombalonga — and offer him £60,000 a week.
Boro boss Garry Monk outbid Burnley and Watford for Nottingham Forest’s Congolese hitman, 24.
They plan to ink the deal once he gets back from Forest’s Florida training camp.
Assombalonga was Forest's 14-goals top scorer last term after beating a career-threatening knee injury.
The big-money move shows how Riverside chairman Steve Gibson lured Monk to the newly-relegated club.
Ex-Swansea manager Monk quit Leeds on May 25, two days after a club take-over and one day before a one-year contract extension was set to be activated.
He joined Boro 15 days later, putting an instant return to the Premier League as his main target.
Burnley were not prepared to match Forest's offer for Assombalonga.
And Watford backed off when the bidding rose.
