A 27-YEAR-OLD man has died as Brazilian as Vasco da Gama fans clashed with military police at a Rio de Janeiro derby.

Two other supporters were shot in the leg, but have been released from hospital, and fourth suffered minor injuries from shattered class.

The 27-year-old Vasco fan was rushed to a local hospital immediately after suffering the gunshot wound, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

As well as violence inside the stadium, there were also some serious issues surrounding the exterior of the Sao Januario stadium as military police were showered with bricks and bottles by angry Vasco fans.

The home faithful saw their side lose 1-0 to their biggest rivals and reacted by rioting and throwing homemade bombs onto the pitch, where Flamengo players were forced to flee.

Some supporters even tried to invade the TV and radio broadcast studios as they attempted to get away from the violence.

Military police were forced to intervene — using pepper spray and tear gas in an attempt to bring in order.

Vinicuis Jnr., 16, who has agreed to join Real Madrid for £38million, could be seen forced to cover his eyes to avoid the effects of the tear gas.

However, the situation got out of hand and a fan was fatally wounded.

Earlier this season, a 28-year-old Botafogo fan was killed and eight injured in another Rio derby against Flamengo.

On that occasion, the contest remarkably took place despite an ongoing strike by local police.

This latest tragedy is likely to see Vasco’s stadium closed for ten games and hit with a fine of around £230,000.
