NEWCASTLE are applying the finishing touches to their £17.5million move for Greek international Andreas Samaris.
The Benfica star is set to become the third signing at St James' Park this summer - following the arrivals of Florian Lejeune and Christian Atsu.
According to the , Benitez will have to carefully allocate his budget to afford the move.
The Magpies have held talks with Benfica over a move for the 28-year-old as they look to prepare their squad for the Premier League.
The Portuguese side are able to demand a high fee for their man as he two years left on his contract.
Samaris arrived at Benfica in 2014 after joining from Olympiacos for £8.8m.
In his time at the Estadio da Luz he has won three Primeira Liga titles after winning the Greek league title with Olympiacos in 2014.
Samaris has made 28 appearances for Greece and has represented his nation at the World Cup.
While Benitez is reportedly having to balance his budget to land Samaris, the Magpies rejected a £5million bid from Norwich for Karl Darlow.
After missing out on a loan move for Tammy Abraham, Benitez is now eyeing a move for Chelsea's other youngster Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Newcastle are also reportedly in the race with Everton to land Burnley forward Andre Gray.
