United are investing heavily this summer on their playing squad as Jose Mourinho attempts to bridge the gap to the top four in the Premier League.
The extra demands of Champions League football will also need more strength in depth is needed, and Mourinho has given executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward a list of targets.
Midfield is a key area he is hoping to add quality to, with the club already closing in on signing Chelsea star Nemanja Matic.
With Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger both being shipped out by Mourinho last season, that leaves room for one more player to come in to the squad.
And Nainggolan could be the man if the reports in Italy are accurate that United have made their first move to sign him.

The 29-year-old resisted overtures from Premier League clubs a year ago to stay with Roma, but he may be tempted if an opportunity arose this time round.
Asked about the United interest earlier this month, Nainggolan said
"It can be true, it can be not true, that's something that you have to know."
He added: "When you play football you have to make choices and last season my choice was to stay.
"We'll see [what will happen this summer]. I'm going to go on vacation and then we will talk about it."
