It was expected that the deal would only go through once Pickford returned from international duty.

But the Toffees were keen to get things wrapped up as soon as possible.

Pickford will become the world's third most expensive keeper and the most expensive British stopper of all time.

And he will quickly have to turn his head to international duties, with England set to take on Sweden in the opener of the European Under-21 Championships on Friday.

Even though he is 23, he was 21 during the start of qualifying, so is eligible to play.

Pickford will want to use the tournament as a platform to chase down the No1 jersey for Gareth Southgate's senior side at next summer's World Cup.

He admitted recently he has been focusing on his football, after feeling gutted over the Black Cats' relegation to the Championship.

He said: "I have spoken to my agent and told him that I just want to concentrate on the Euros and be the best I can be.

"I’ll see where it takes me, being a Sunderland lad it’s a bit hard to take and it’ll always be hard to take.

"Financially it’s not ideal for the whole club."
