Valencia stopper Ryan is a viable option for Hughton, who moved to Spain from Brugge in 2015.

Club officials have travelled to Spain for more talks with the Spanish club about the 25-year-old who has four years left on his current deal.

The Australian international made 20 appearances for Valencia, under former boss Gary Neville and featured for his country against England in the 2-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light before Euro 2016.

Diego Alves replaced Ryan in goal once Neville was sacked, and after two games was sent back to Belgium on loan to Racing Genk.

He played only twice for Valencia at the start of last season, before returning to Belgium in January on loan to Racing Genk.

Promoting Niki Maenpaa is another option, the Finnish keeper played just seven games last season, while young keeper Christian Walton will go out on loan to gain more experience.
