Family of Monaco star Benjamin Mendy confirm £40m switch to Manchester City

MANCHESTER CITY are set to raid Monaco again for their second summer signing in defender Benjamin Mendy - according to his family.

According to sources in France, the 22-year-old has already signed for City, becoming another new name in Pep Guardiola's squad, with the manager on the look-out for new full-backs.

The City boss has been desperate to reinforce his defence, after Vincent Kompany's absence for most of last season led to severe instability at the back and to a high number of goals conceded.

Mendy was part of Monaco's impressive march to the Ligue 1 title this season and helped Leonardo Jardim's side to the Champions League semi-finals.

And with Gael Clichy leaving the club this summer, his compatriot looks set to come in as a replacement.

Monaco are set to ask for around £40million for the player they paid Marseille only £5.5m for 12 months ago.

That's a staggering mark-up of £34.5m in just one season.

But as previously reported, Guardiola is striving to build a solid defence around John Stones at the Etihad.

He is also on the look-out for new full-backs, with Tottenham's Kyle Walker reportedly interested in boosting his wage packet with a move north.

Guardiola has also been scouting Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao and Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos.

City already confirmed the capture of Bernardo Silva from Monaco for £43m last week after Guardiola jumped the gun on Manchester United's mooted interest.
