SIR Alex Ferguson has praised Manchester United for winning Europa League and giving the city a boost.
The Red Devils won the trophy just two days after the horrendous terror attack on Manchester Arena that left 22 dead and many more injured.
Ex-United boss Ferguson said he was proud of the 2-0 victory and the manner of the performance as they qualified for the Champions League next season.
A minute’s silence before the game turned into applause as the crowd chanted “Manchester”, while there were countless banners and placards in support after a tragic week for the city.
He was present in Stockholm for the victory last night, but was speaking today in Glasgow to mark Celtic’s Lisbon Lions becoming the first British team to win the European Cup.
He told Sky Sports: “I think, first of all, Manchester is a city like Glasgow, it is a working class city, we have fantastic people there and they will get together.
“They have been through some difficult times in the past with the bombing in the Arndale Centre in 1996 and they recovered from that.
“They will get together because there is a working class ethic about them and there is a great unity now in the city.
“I think United last night gave the city a lift and I think that was what it was about. We are all proud of them, it was a great achievement.”
