Chapecoense flight forced to make emergency stop on way back from Argentina and players make 11-hour coach ride home

CHAPECOENSE were forced to make an emergency stop as they flew back from Buenos Aries.

The Brazilian side were involved in a tragic aeroplane crash on the way playing the Copa Sudameria Final in Colombia last year, when 71 of the 77 people on board died.

It was an event which united the world of football.

And there was real horror once again when the flight carrying them back from the Argentinian capital city, following their clash with Lanus in the Copa Libertadores, was forced to make an emergency detour and land in Porto Alegre.

A problem with the runway at Chapeco airport was the cause for the diversion.

As a precaution, the players have taken a bus the rest of the way — a journey which will take roughly 11 hours.

Chapecoense are due to face Palmeiras on Saturday evening, but the clash could now be put back.

Amazingly, despite the tragic incident of the last year, the 2017 regional champions have been much travelled.

Chapecoense now need to beat Ecuadorian side, Zulia, in the final group stage match to clinch qualification to the next round.
