There were question marks about Carrick's future at the start of the campaign.

Carrick started the Community Shield win against Leicester City but didn't start the next six games.

United boss Jose Mourinho is a big admirer of the midfielder, and he was hailed as the man who helped record signing Paul Pogba settle into the side earlier in the season.

Mourinho said:“He gives stability in our game and mental freedom to the other guys around him to be more offensive.

“It's a pity he is not 25. It's a pity you can't stop the clock.

"Michael is a very good player and one who will be very difficult to replace.”

Carrick, who will have a testimonial on June 4, moved to Old Trafford from Tottenham in 2006 for £18million under Sir Alex Ferguson to replace Roy Keane.

He has gone on to make 457 appearances, win five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, three league cups and FIFA Club World Cup.
