But they were still left reeling at the stick they received as they left the ground to board the coach back to north London.

Until now, under-fire Wenger has taken the brunt of the abuse from supporters who have lost patience with the way the club has fallen from grace.

But last night the players and the manager were both on the receiving end as fans left them in no doubt how they had let the club down.

Wenger was booed and barracked as he emerged to climb onto the coach, with calls for him to quit now for the good of the club.

And the players who were so inept against Palace also took a hammering from fans who have decided enough is enough.

Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey were among those targeted after a display captain for the night Theo Walcott admitted was not good enough.

But any decision on Wenger's future is still unlikely to come until the end of the season as Arsenal lurch from chaos into crisis as their season collapses around them.

Wenger himself still insists he is the right man to correct the problems at the Emirates, although the board may now start to take a different view.
