Crystal Palace target Glen Johnson as Sam Allardyce rivals West Ham for Stoke and England defender on a free transfer

Johnson, 32, has not played enough games to trigger a Potters extension and Allardyce wants him to compete with Joel Ward

CRYSTAL PALACE have made the first move to land Glen Johnson on a free this summer.

The 32-year-old has not played enough games at Stoke this season to trigger an option to keep him for one more season.

And Sam Allardyce is prepared to move for him to add competition for Joel Ward at right-back.

Big Sam wants Johnson’s experience next season and has joined the race for the ex-Liverpool star.

West Ham also have Johnson on their list of targets for the next transfer window.

Slaven Bilic wanted him in January and despite uncertainty over the Hammers boss’ future, the veteran defender remains on their radar.

Johnson is among the experienced right-backs on the market this summer, with Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna also out of contract.
