While stunning partner Rodriguez donned jeans and a pale suit jacket over a black top as she provided a welcome contrast to the formal attire by sporting a smart-casual look in Santa Cruz.
The reigning Ballon d'Or and Fifa 'The Best' winner said: "Thank you for being here in my honour.
"Seeing my name being given to this airport is something very special, everyone knows that I am proud of my country and my especially my home city.
"Thank you very much to the President of the Regional Government for having had the Courage and the firmness to do it."
Locally there had been some critics of the decision to rename the airport after a footballer.
But Ronaldo insisted he did not ask for the tribute, yet was honoured to accept it.
He added: "My friend Miguel Albuquerque, I never asked for this, but I'm not a hypocrite, and I'm happy and honored.
"I know some people do not agree and I know some people who are not here would be happy for this moment.
"I will try to dignify Portugal and especially Madeira with a spirit of sacrifice, dignity and passion."
