WITH England travelling to Germany tonight to take on the 2014 World Cup winners in an international friendly, Football Whispers have assessed both squads to compile a combined XI.
Germany coach Joachim Low is able to select from deep cast of world-class stars during every international break, while Gareth Southgate’s talent pool more resembles a puddle by comparison.
Dele Alli would get into most teams, but how many other Three Lions players would figure in a combined Germany-England XI?

GK – Marc-Andre ter Stegen – Germany
Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer would have been nailed on as the goalkeeper in this fantasy XI had he been fit for tonight’s game, but Barcelona sweeper-keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is a more than able deputy.
Blessed with tremendous reflexes and a commanding presence, it is perhaps his remarkable range of passing that makes ter Stegen so unique and the key reason why he was Pep Guardiola’s first choice to replace Joe Hart at Manchester City last summer.
RB – Kyle Walker – England
Since Philipp Lahm retired from international football after the 2014 World Cup, Germany have been squeezing square pegs into a round hole on the right side of their defence, with Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich doing an admirable job in the position at last summer’s European Championships.
But Tottenham Hotspur’s Kyle Walker has been in the form of his life over the last 18 months, and as a specialist in the role, he is our pick for the right-back spot.
CB – Mats Hummels – Germany
Signed by Bayern from rivals Borussia Dortmund last summer, centre-back Mats Hummels is not without his flaws.
Lacking pace and occasionally suffering lapses in concentration, the 28-year-old more than makes up for his deficiencies with his excellent anticipation and wonderful ability to construct attacking moves from the back with crisp and accurate forward passes.
CB – Shkodran Mustafi – Germany
Ordinarily, Hummels would be lining up alongside his Bayern defensive partner Jerome Boateng, but the former Manchester City man is unavailable tonight, and Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi is the next best option.
Signed from Valencia for £35million in August, the jury is still out on Mustafi in the Premier League.
But his performances in La Liga and Serie A earlier in his career are evidence of his pedigree.
LB – Jonas Hector – Germany
Were Danny Rose fit for selection, this would have been a much more interesting contest. With the Spurs man out, however, Cologne’s versatile and experienced Jonas Hector has all of the requisite qualities to make the left-back berth in this team his own.
Linked with a move to Liverpool last summer, Hector is responsible defensively and effective in attack, and a key player the Cologne team which has upset the odds to climb up to sixth in the Bundesliga this term.
DM – Toni Kroos – Germany
Real Madrid playmaker Toni Kroos would arguably be the first name on the teamsheet of a combined England and Germany XI. The former Bayern midfielder is one of the finest passers in world football and tops La Liga when it comes to assists this term.
Once a transfer target for Manchester United, the 27-year-old has the authority and creativity that can see him transform any game.
DM – Sami Khedira - Germany
After bursting onto the scene as part of the exciting young Germany side that reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2010, combative midfielder Sami Khedira secured a move to Real Madrid.
Injuries hampered his spell at the Bernabeu, but a switch to Juventus has revitalised his career and allowed him to demonstrate the he is still one of the very best in his position.
RW – Julian Draxler – Germany
Capable of playing in any of the attacking midfield positions, Julian Draxler’s ability has never been in doubt, but he is now finally starting to deliver on the promise of his early career with Schalke.
Perennially linked with Arsenal, the 23-year-old moved to Paris Saint-Germain in January and has been exceptional in France, with seven goals in 16 games for Unai Emery’s men.
CAM – Dele Alli – England
The one England player who would get into almost any international side in the world, Tottenham’s Dele Alli is the crown jewel of Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions.
Still only 20, Alli has already marked himself out as one of the best players in the Premier League, scoring 24 goals in 60 games in England’s top flight and reportedly attracting interest from Real Madrid.
LW – Raheem Sterling – England
One of the scapegoats for England’s poor Euro 2016 campaign last summer, Raheem Sterling seemed to be weighed down by the £49million price tag of his controversial switch from Liverpool to Manchester City.
But the 21-year-old looks like a player reborn under Pep Guardiola this term and is quietly becoming one of the most effective and dangerous forwards in the Premier League.
ST – Mario Gomez – Germany
Joachim Low has struggled to replace talismanic striker Miroslav Klose at the point of his attack since the towering marksman called time on his international career; had Harry Kane been fit, he’d have been a shoo-in for this position.
However, former Bayern Munich and Fiorentina poacher Mario Gomez has been in hot form of late with three goals in his last three games for Wolfsburg.
And with 29 goals for Germany from 69 caps, there can be no doubt about his ability to find the net at the highest level.
