THE USE of video technology in the FA Cup next season could be announced this afternoon.
The Football Association are hosting a meeting with Fifa and the International Football Association Board today where the topic is up for debate.
And though initial plans were to use technology in next year's Community Shield, Sunsport understands the system could now be rolled out for the world's biggest cup competition as well.
IFAB is the body that governs the laws of football, made up of the four home nations and Fifa.
They are meeting with Fifa president Gianni Infantino at Wemley today to ratify the rule changes to be introduced for next season.
High on the list is the use of video replays to assist referees with decision making beyond just goalline technology, with the system already being trialled in England and other leagues across the world.
Early results have been good, and now the group hope to agree to extend use into FA Cup matches next season to help continue development.
Discussions are taking place as to which stage of the competition it will begin, but the third round when Premier League and Championship clubs enter the tournament is seen as a logical fit.
The FA are expected to hold a press conference on Friday at Wembley to announce what agreements have been reached, and they want to make video technology the central component.
The move comes less than a week after the EFL Cup Final in which Southampton were denied a goal that video technology clearly showed should have been given against Manchester United.
Trials and talks were already at an advanced stage before that match, but it only served to magnify the need for referees to be given assistance in matches.
IFAB and FIFA are also expected to announce video technology will be used in the World Cup Finals for the first time in Russia next year.
Another topic on the agenda is to enforce a new rule where only captains of teams are allowed to approach a referee in an effort to reduce the abuse of officials by players.
