Explaining his decision, Mourinho said: "The initials in my shirt, with his name, is my little homage to somebody that wrote the most beautiful history of the Premier League somebody that would deserve the Leicester stadium to be named 'Claudio Ranieri' and has been sacked.

"I thought last season when I was sacked as a champion was a giant negative thing.

"Now I realise that was peanuts compared with what happened to Claudio.

"My Instagram was a little homage, my shirt is another one. I don't think he needs more homages because nobody can delete what he did.

"If some of the stories I am reading are true, or have just a little bit of truth, it's difficult to find words to justify that, but it's also something we managers have to be ready to cope with."

Even before his press conference on Friday afternoon, Mourinho wrote a message of support to the former Foxes boss on Instagram on the evening of his departure.

He wrote: "CHAMPION OF ENGLAND and FIFA MANAGER of THE YEAR⚽️.sacked.
Thats the new football claudio.keep smiling AMICO😀.nobody can delete the history you wrote.👏👏👏👏"

Chelsea boss, Antonio Conte was also very sad at his press conference as he mentioned their friendship.

The Italian said: “I am very sad because it is our job and I am disappointed for him, he is a friend, a really good man, a really good manager and he won the title only months ago.

“He reached a dream to win the title and as a coach I am sad.”
