Meanwhile, 31-year-old Rooney has barely featured since breaking the club’s all-time goal-scoring record at Stoke last month. He has missed the last four games with a muscle injury and a tooth problem and has started just three of the 12 matches in 2017.

Mourinho was pleased by Rashford’s display at Ewood Park and said: “It was one more chance for him to continue his evolution and an important goal.

“Sometimes people forget — he is selected for every game and playing almost every one.”

Rooney continues to be linked with a move to China this month and Mourinho suggested he will not feature at Saint-Etienne tomorrow.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata would all expect to be picked ahead of Rooney.
