A BRAZILIAN defender last night scored one of the greatest own goals of all time.

With the ball in the opposition half, Sao Bento's Joao Paulo incredibly took a touch and then lobbed his own goalkeeper.

Despite being put in all sorts of trouble by his defender, the goalkeeper made a heroic effort to track back and clear the ball.

Many would even argue that he managed to get there before the ball crossed the line.

To say he overcooks it would be an understatement

But the linesman was convinced, the hilarious own goal stood and Sao Bento were probably too embarrassed to argue.

To make matters worse for Joao Paulo, his unbelievable lob in the wrong direction turned out to be the only goal of the game as opponents Ituano ran out 1-0 winners.

The strike had echoes of Lee Dixon's infamous own goal against Coventry in 1991.

But at least the Arsenal legend only lobbed David Seaman from the edge of the penalty area.
