Shanghai Shenhua and world’s highest paid player Carlos Tevez knocked out of Asian Champions League in qualifying round
Chinese Super League side managed by Gus Poyet crash out before the group stages to Brisbaine Roar
SHANGHAI SHENUA and the world's highest paid player Carlos Tevez have been knocked out of the Asian Champions League at the qualifying stage.
The Chinese Super League club broke the world record when they signed former Manchester United star on a contract worth £615,000-a-week.
But the Argentine was unable to inspire his new team on his competitive debut as they crashed out with a 2-0 home defeat to Brisbane Roar.
The defeat was a hammer blow for Shanghai boss Gus Poyet, who had gone to such detailed lengths to prepare his team he even fixed up a friendly against another Australian side the week before.
Tevez was expected to come in and help turn the club into one of the powerhouses of the Asian game after his move from Boca Juniors.
But the 33-year-old hardly got a kick as his side were sent spinning out of the continent's biggest tournament before it had really started.
First half goals from Brandon Borello and Tommy Oar where enough to send Brisbane through - managed by former Portsmouth and Coventry striker John Aloisi.
Aloisi had sent his team out with a plan to frustrate Shanghai - but they then got off to the best start possible when Borello opened the scoring after just two minutes.
Oar punished the Chinese side's poor defending by doubling the lead five minutes before the break - leading to Poyet and his side being booed off at half-time.
Tevez struggled to make any real impact on the game, and instead it was former Newcastle and Birmingham star Obafemi Martins who at least threatened to bring Shanghai back into the match.
But Brisbane easily saw out the second half and secured their spot in Group E alongside Kashima Antlers of Japan, South Korean club Ulsan Hyundai and Thailand's Muangthing United.
