And , the now Crystal Palace boss actively sought to end the defender's four-year exile from the national team.

Allardyce is said to have asked the FA's permission to recall the Chelsea captain, however the top brass concluded it would be seen as sending the national team backwards.

The FA further stated that they beleived Terry coming out retirment would cause too much controversy and media attention.

This decision represents a change in policy for the FA, prevoius Chairman Greg Dyke had stated that selection issues were the managers decision and not the Football Association's.

The 36-year old retired from international football football in 2012 after being accused of allegedly racially abusing Anton Ferdinand, Terry was found guilty and banned for four matches.

Allardyce accepted the FA's decision on Terry without complaint and continued his tenure with Wayne Rooney as captain.

The decision made by the FA has been largely vindicated by Terry's lack of appearances this season under new boss Antonio Conte as Chelsea charge towards the Premier League title.

New England manager Gareth Southgate has no plans of recalling the the ex-captain as he begins England's World Cup qualifying campaign.
