Palace are set to pay the next £3million instalment to Newcastle for Townsend this month and would prefer to spend the cash on Sunderland full back Patrick Van Aanholt.

The arrival of the Black Cats full back will allow new boy Jeffrey Schlupp to play in a more advanced role on the left, leaving Townsend surplus to requirements at Selhurst Park.

But next instalment due could become a loan fee with Newcastle then forking out £10m in the summer to make the switch permanent.

Rafa Benitez is looking to add a winger this month, the Spaniard has also lined up Swansea winger Modou Barrow if the Townsend deal id called off.
