CRYSTAL PALACE will renew their interest in Sunderland star Patrick van Aanholt after their move to sign Carl Jenkinson collapsed.

Palace boss Sam Allardyce had hoped to bring in the Arsenal defender on a permanent move after the club reached agreement over a £7million fee.

But Jenkinson failed to agree personal terms and now the deal is off - leaving Allardyce desperately looking around for players to strengthen his efforts to help beat relegation.

And he is now set to make a second move for Black Cats full-back Van Aanholt, having already seen a £7m bid for the Dutchman rejected earlier this month.

Sunderland boss David Moyes is already having to battle to beat the drop with a squad depleted by injuries and with a lack of financial ability to bring in any new players.

Now he faces having to persuade his bosses not to cash on Van Aanholt as they consider trying to balance the finances even with the threat of dropping out of the Premier League hanging over them.

Moyes has already seen West Ham try to unsettle his squad with their interest in Jermain Defoe, and thought he had seen off Palace's attempts to sign 26-year-old Van Aanholt.

But now Allardyce is ready to test Sunderland again with a second bid for the Dutch international - and then it would be down to whether the player wants to swap one relegation fight for another.

Allardyce has been frustrated in his attempts to make wholesale changes at Selhurst Park with bids in for up to eight players so far this month.

He has only managed to complete the signing of one - Jeffrey Schlupp from Leicester in a £12m move.

Palace entertain Everton this week knowing they could drop into the bottom three of the table if they fail to take maximum points from the game.
