Tottenham Hotspur news: It’s D-day for Jan Vertonghen as he finds out results of ankle injury scan

Belgian defender is so integral to title-chasers but could miss eight weeks of action after getting hurt in West Brom win

TOTTENHAM hope to discover the extent of Jan Vertgonhen’s ankle injury on Tuesday – but are already planning for Saturday’s clash at Manchester City without him.

The Spurs defender rolled his ankle in the second half of his side’s 4-0 win over West Brom on Saturday.

And Belgian stalwart Vertonghen, who was wincing with pain as club medics helped him back to the dressing room, underwent a scan on Monday.

Tottenham expect to get the results today, but have already ruled him out of this weekend’s clash at City.

White Hart Lane boss Mauricio Pochettino said after the game he feared his Belgian ace had suffered ligament damage.

If that is the case then Vertonghen is likely to be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

It would be a cruel blow for the centre-back who also suffered a bad injury last January, which ruled him out for 12 weeks last season.

Pochettino insists he will not be forced into the transfer market to sign a replacement as he already has Kevin Wimmer and Ben Davies who can fill Vertonghen’s role.

The 30-year-old has been a near ever-present this season as Pochettino's men mount a serious title charge for the second season in succession.
