Manchester United vs Liverpool: Wayne Rooney voted Reds boss Jurgen Klopp for the Fifa Coach of the Year awards

Klopp was stunned to discover that Rooney had backed him - but will go all out to stop him breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's goal record

WAYNE ROONEY goes for the Manchester United goals record of 250 today against the boss he ranks as one of the best in the world.

Old Trafford captain Rooney last week voted Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp as one of his top three in the Fifa Coach of the Year awards.

Klopp was stunned to discover that Rooney had backed him.

But he does believe the vote may have been payback for the backing he gave Roo after he was pictured drinking until 5am at the England hotel in November.

The Kop boss admitted that he had once been caught drunk as manager of Mainz and said that football legends used to “drink like devils”.

Should Rooney play today, Klopp will do everything in his power to block that record bid.

Rooney made ultimate winner Claudio Ranieri his No 1 choice for the Fifa gong, followed by Wales’ Chris Coleman, then Klopp.

The German said: “Thank you, but it was not enough.

“OK, I’m pretty sure it is to do with my reaction to him after the little ‘incident’.

“I’m sure Wayne Rooney doesn’t think a lot about me. Why should he? He is a Manchester United player.”
