MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho will activate a one-year extension in David de Gea's contract this summer, SunSport understands.
The 26-year-old Spanish stopper - a long-time transfer target of Real Madrid - has two years left on his current United deal.
But Old Trafford chiefs are ready to extend his stay until 2020, and will also give him a bumper pay-rise.
It is thought de Gea's wages of £180,000-a-week will be increased past the £200,000 mark, making him one of the highest paid players in the Premier League.
A United insider said: "The club are looking to exercise their option to extend David's deal this summer.
"He will be given a pay increase. He has consistently been one of the best goalkeepers in the world for a number of years now.
"There shouldn't be any problems, but clubs have been sniffing around him for a number of years now."
United added a 12-month extension clause in to de Gea's contract when he renewed back in 2015.
He has been one of the Red Devil's most consistent players, picking up the club's player of the year award for the past three seasons in a row.
He was on the brink of joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2015, but a deadline day switch failed to go through in time thanks to a dodgy fax machine.
The Champions League holders have been admirers of him since his days with their bitter rivals Atletico Madrid.
But Zinedine Zidane's side have since moved their attentions on to signing Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois this summer.
It is understood that if they can't land the 24-year-old Belgian, a move for de Gea could be back on the cards.
According to reports in Spain this week, de Gea has a clause in his contract that will let him join Madrid for £43m in the next two years.
It is not known whether that is the case, but if true, United would be looking to remove it from his terms.
United triggered a one-year extension on midfielder Marouane Fellaini's deal this week, keeping him at the club until 2018.
Jesse Lingard has also been given a new contract, with his wages being increased to a staggering £95,000-a-week.
De Gea joined Manchester United for a British-record fee for a goalkeeper back in 2011 from Atletico at £17.8m.
He had a rocky start to life at Old Trafford, but transformed himself after a number of notable blunders.
He has gone on to make 185 appearances for the club, and is regarded by many as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.
